Elton John(엘튼 존)은 작사가인 Bernie Taupin(버니 토핀)과 함께 1970년대에 일련의 히트를 만들어 냈다. 동물에 대한 노래였던 'Crocodile Rock(악어 바위)'와 'Honky Cat(하얀 고양이)'와 같은 히트는 로큰롤이었으며 'Rocket Man(로켓 맨)'과 'Bennie And The Jets(베니 앤더 제트)'는 그도 느린 음악이 가능하다는 점을 보여주었다.

 

1976년에 이르러 일련의 개인적인 문제와 예술가로써의 문제가 부각되었지만, 'I'm Still Standing(난 아직 건재하다)'와 'Sad Songs (Say So Much)(비가, 너무 많이 이야기하다)'와 같은 싱글을 통하여 1980년대 차트에서 원래 위치로 돌아온다.
