캐나다 출신의 싱어송라이터 The Weeknd(더 위켄드) 데뷔 이전 R&B 밴드와 솔로 믹스테잎을 통해 활동을 시작해 [House Of Balloon]의 수록곡 'What You Need', 'Loft Music', 'The Morning'으로 유튜브에서 인기를 얻으면서 주목을 받았다.

 

2012년 컴필레이션 앨범 [Trilogy]을 발표, 빌보드 200 차트 4위에 오르면서 RIAA 플래티넘을 달성했으며 ' Wicked Games'로 싱글 차트 53위를 기록하며 상업적인 성과를 얻어 가기 시작했다.

 빌보드 200 차트 2위를 달성한 그의 첫 정규 앨범 [Kiss Land]를 통해 몽환적인 멜로디와 마이클 잭슨을 연상시키는 특유의 미성을 선보였다. 2015년 2집 [BBTM]을 발표해 앨범 차트 1위를 차지했고, 수록곡인 'Can't Feel My Face'와 'The Hills'를 빌보드 정상에 올려놓으며 "AMA", "그래미 어워드", "빌보드 뮤직 어워드"에서 다수의 상을 수상하면서 두각을 나타냈다. 이어진 세 번째 앨범 [Starboy] 역시 앨범 차트 1위로 데뷔했으며, Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Future 등 스타 아티스트들이 참여해 듣는 재미를 높였다. 특히 수록곡 'Starboy'로 역대 최장기 빌보드 R&B 차트 1위를 달성하는 기록을 세우기도 했다.

2018년에는 데뷔 이래 첫 EP [My Dear Melancholy,]를 발표, 3번 연속 앨범 차트 1위라는 개인 최고 기록을 세웠으며 이후 Rae Sremmurd, Belly, Zay-Z, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj 등의 아티스트들과의 활발한 협업으로 다양하고 넓은 음악적 스펙트럼과 매력을 보여주었다. 2020년 선공개 싱글 'After Hours'를 시작으로 동명의 앨범을 발표, 라스베이거스와 카지노 등 환각적인 영화에서 영감을 얻은 음악을 선보였고 이듬해 정규작 [The Highlights]로 활동을 이어나갔다. 또한 "2021 빌보드 뮤직 어워드"에서 10관왕을 차지하며 그의 음악성과 영향력을 입증시켰다.
